........................... We're thrilled to announce that Quaint received ........................... Reviews or tune into Time Warner Cable NY/NJ Channel 1112
........................... New York Magazine: Restaurants Section A minirestaurant row has sprouted on Sunnyside’s Skillman Avenue, where Bliss and, now, Quaint have joined pizzerias, saloons, and Romanian cafés. Starting with its phone number (it has a 917 prefix), Quaint pitches itself as a comfort station for Manhattan expats. The place is busy and welcoming, but quaint it ain’t. It’s more like a sleekly updated bar and grill, with a handsome wood bar and occasional $3 beer specials that lure neighborhood dwellers. An open kitchen faces a row of church pewlike booths along a vermilion wall; the narrow dining room leads to a stark but airy rear patio, where blasé toddlers amuse themselves among grazing and chatting adults. Diners arriving after 9:30 risk facing eighty-sixed dishes. Nevertheless, you’re likely to fare well with whatever remains of the enlightened country menu, whether it’s grilled hanger steak with coffee sauce or barbecue-spiced chicken. Perhaps most satisfying of all are the skin-on fries. Locals forking over a few bucks for these sensational spuds and a bargain bottle of Blue Moon brew are likely to become Quaint regulars. Papermag 46-10 Skillman Ave., (917) 779-9220. ........................... 15 June 2006 Quaint’s owner Tim Chen is very insistent that his restaurant is not an “upscale” eating establishment. “We didn’t try to make it very fancy,” he says. “We tried to make it very casual but nice. Most of the stuff in the restaurant is used. If we’d have put a tablecloth down it would have changed the whole experience.” While that may be true, Quaint has a classy look to it with muted lighting, an open air kitchen and a backyard for outdoor dining. The “used” furniture Chen mentions has obviously been carefully chosen to give the restaurant a, well, quaint feel. Instead of individual chairs, diners share converted pews purchased from a local synagogue. The cuisine is described as “New American” and the menu pairs down home appetizers such as macaroni and cheese with more sophisticated fare like grilled house flatbreads with white bean spread, olive walnut tapenade and garlic honey spread. The entrées are similarly eclectic with a house burger alongside interesting fish selections such as marlinthe catch of the day when we wentand grilled escolar. The menu draws on the produce of local farms in upstate New York and from Quaint’s own herb garden located behind the restaurant. Chen said the biggest challenge with Quaint, which has been open only for six weeks but was a year in the making, was getting approval for its sprinkler system. “Business has been 90 percent from the surrounding neighborhood,” says Chen, who lives nearby on 45th Street. “The restaurant is for people who like to linger. You feel comfortable here.” ........................... Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce Quaint is a New American Bistro dedicated to creating a neighborhood restaurant experience that maintains the classic attributes of warmth and affordability while delivering superior food and service. The seasonal menu will draw from the produce of local farms in upstate New York and from Quaint’s own herb garden located in the rear of the restaurant. Meet your host Tim Chen who is no stranger to the Chamber. Tim has been a member of the Chamber for over two years when he first attended a Chamber Restaurant month meeting. Tim Chen, a native New Yorker, bored with being a civil engineer, changed careers in 1997 by enrolling at the New York Restaurant School (now called the Art Institute). This led to an externship at the Upper East Side, three-star-rated March Restaurant, and a line cook position under Chef Wayne Nish. Since 1997, Tim has worked in every aspect of the Restaurant business. Check his résumé on their website. www.quaintnyc.com. A lot a time and energy went into the planning of this extraordinary restaurant and it is well worth your visit. I totally enjoyed the food, the ambience and the friendly service. By the way, while visiting the website check out the résumé of their well-qualified chef Joe Dobias, presently Joe is looking for an apartment in Sunnyside. (Realtors, take Note)! Sunnyside continues to prove it’s self that we have the best and finest restaurants in all of New York City. We welcome Tim and his great family friendly restaurant. Thanks for helping to keep Sunnyside the first place to come when you want to eat out and have a great meal! ........................... |
